We aren’t aware the risk of virus before, been working on computer in several years and many system was fallen due to viruses attack on our small network. Some of them survived and the rest was forced to reinstall or restore. We work with few peoples where many of them most likely don’t care about what happened to the computers since they don’t own it. They mostly have all their document saved on a flash disk. I was one of them until one day someone came to me and gave me an infected document.
It was started by a tiny file on flash disk and then spread to several computers including my own laptop. Next i realized that more than 50% computers in our office was infected. After several similar attacks we finally understand that Anti Virus is not the only things that we must depend on, there’s many more things need to be done in order to support Anti Virus and spread of viruses prevention:
1. Update Antivirus Regularly
We are not full time work with internet, only for email and web publishing. That’s why antivirus auto update sometime failed to update their definition especially when we away from internet source. Now we remind each other to check and manually update antivirus definition regularly. This is the most important thing to do since antivirus is the weapon we need in order to destroy viruses found on our system.
2. Disable Windows Autoplay
I think everyone know when we plug a plug and play media (whenever it’s a flash disk or a cd) system will try to read its contents. There is a file named autorun.inf which can be the source of trouble, viruses sometime put their startup script in this file. So disabling autorun system will also prevent virus from automatically execute their self on computer which will reduce the risk of virus. But still we are not 100% safe, viruses still can executed their self when we browse the media with windows explorer. Microsoft has an official help information regarding disabling autoplay.
3. Browse/Copy content of a Flash Disk with MS-DOS
Sounds weird right? an ancient system of Microsoft which is still there until now. We use this method since our last attack last year and having no problem until now. Even if we accidentally execute the virus, antivirus will react against the virus (as long as it’s a known virus). We just need several MS-DOS command to work with files in this method such as COPY, DEL, REN and DIR.
4. Always Scan With Antivirus Before Browsing Flash Disk
Some of us don’t like black background and typing text commands, they only like “click” and “click”, so windows explorer is likely the only method. But before we browse to the disk, we have to make sure that there are no viruses on it. So every time we have incoming flash disk we will right click the drive and scan with anti virus to reduce the risk of virus. Of course this will take sometime to finish depend on disk size and files number. But for safety, why not?.
5. Beware for Any Unknown Incoming Email Message
Like the title said, if we don’t know the sender name especially email that contain an attachment, we will keep this email status unread and move them to a specific folder (we called it suspicious folder). Until someone called us and telling that they’ve send us a document with email.
Actually there still many thing we do in order to reduce the risk of virus infection, such as getting a dummy computer, backup regularly and try work with Linux on our public documents rather than windows. But the most important thing is the antivirus, we need to keep it uptodate so it will aware for any newly viruses.
